पत्रकारिता का निडर और निर्भीक चेहरा, मीडिया की आजादी की पक्षधर, कन्नड़ भाषा की साप्ताहिक पत्रिका ‘लंकेश पत्रिके’ की संपादक व वरिष्ठ पत्रकार गौरी लंकेश की अज्ञात बदमाशों ने गोली मारकर हत्या कर दी। हमलावरों ने उनके घर में घुसकर लंकेश पर सात गोलियां चलाई और मौके पर ही उनकी मौत हो गई। वामपंथी विचारधारा से प्रभावित व दक्षिणपंथी संगठनों से वैचारिक मतभेदों को लेकर उन्हें अक्सर धमकिया मिलती रहती थी। गौरी लंकेश हिंदुत्ववादी राजनीति की मुखर आलोचक थीं। लंकेश पत्रकारिता की दुनिया के साथ साथ वह कर्नाटक की सिविल सोसायटी की चर्चित चेहरा थीं।
गौरी लंकेश की मौत की खबर से पत्रकारिता दुनिया समेत फ़िल्मी जगत, राजनितिक गलियारे में शोक फ़ैल गया। गौरी लंकेश की मौत ने लोगों को स्तब्ध कर दिया है। जाने माने पत्रकार, फ़िल्मी सितारे, राजनेता व साहित्यकारों ने लंकेश की मौत पर शोक प्रकट किया।
